A delicate percussion

I first encountered these delicate percussion instruments whilst visiting India in the 1970s. The skilled street musicians held me in rapture because of the range of sounds they produced. By hitting the Tabla drums with the palms and fingers they produced a range of pitch and depth. The two sizes of the drums are responsible for this unique tone. Once I was able to recognize the sound of this instrument I realized when I returned to the west just how frequently they feature in a range of musical genres. You can often identify them in jazz recordings and especially in film scores.
