How much to pay for private plates

What is a reasonable price for private plates ? Some sell for £444,000 some are only a couple of hundred pounds. Why is there such a huge variation in prices. Soem of it due to rarity, S 1 , the first number ever issued made £440,000 at auction which is astounding. Some numbers are bought and resold at hugely infltated prices and these should be avoided as they will not keep their value. Many high prices are because there are a finite number of registrations of a particular combination of letters while this same combination is a very popular one.
