Finding out where I came from

I don’t really know a lot about my family tree. I have heard stories, and I know that my dad has a book my grandmother made with a family tree and a family history going back quite a ways, but there isn’t anything like that from my mother’s side of the family, so I want to find out a bit more about where I came from. I am going to start by looking up my grandmother in the Social Security Death Index to get the names of her parents, and then I can look them up and so on and so forth to get a good idea of who my family was.
