Where Can I Find Out More About Patents?

My son has come up with an idea for what he thinks is a wonderful new invention, and he has told me that he wants to get a patent on it. Can anyone tell me where I can find out more about how to go about doing this? He is determined, so I want to find somewhere we can go to get answers to patent questions that we have. We want to see whether it would be possible for him to get a patent, since we are really not sure what is required in order to complete this process. At least this will be a good learning experience.
