Heel fissures

Heel fissures are cracks in the skin that occur around the heel. They are more common in people who are overweight and have more fat under the heel; in those with dry skin; in those with hard skin and in those who wear open back shoes or no shoes. When we bear weight on the heel, the fat under the heel expands. If the skin is not supple around the edges of the heel, there is a good chance that if the risk factors are present that the skin will crack. The successful treatment of heel fissure after the crack has healed is to remove the risk factors.
