People in the west, by that I mean US and Europe are so used to coffee makers that they would not think that making coffee without machines are possible, unless it is instant coffee. However, if you posed the same question on "how to make coffee with machines" in Asia, then they would be equally surprised. Because they have been making coffee without machines for decades. Take south east asia for example, the local coffee shops have been famous for using coffee socks to make coffee and in Singapore, the numbers of outlets they have exceeds even Starbucks…
