History is key

The history of topographic maps has a very interesting and historically important note to it, if you’ve ever looked into it. Some believe that history is just the study of the past and that those of us who love it should turn our eyes from the past and focus on the future. While I do agree in a small way, I believe whole heartedly that a people who do not learn the lessons of the past are going to be doomed to repeat them. So, to me, learning that the first complete topographic map of a country was completed of France in 1789 allows me to learn the lessons of the past!
