What Does a Probate Attorney Do?

I am trying to figure out what to do about settling my mother’s estate. I want to learn what happens in probate court, and what a probate attorney does. Is it possible to go through probate without hiring an attorney? How difficult is this to do? I am supposed to be the executor for her will, and I want to make sure that I really understand what that involves so that I can decide whether I am really up to the task right now while I am still grieving for my mother. How long does the whole process take, and when does it start?
